Historical Tobacco Consumption and Machine Production

It was never a foregone conclusion that cigarettes would become the dominant way to consume tobacco. Cigarettes had long been an insignificant part of the American tobacco market,  when compared with cigars, chew, and pipes.  Cigarettes only went from niche product to mass-market success after the rolling machine improved dramatically and multiplied output severalfold.
